For many, a mudroom is one of those extra spaces in a home that is probably not missed until it is needed. Unlikely to be high on your priority list when shopping for a home, this space is easily overlooked. But now with the rise of platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, it’s easy to see what you are missing. However, just because your home may not have a designated space to be adorably designed with tote bags, hanging raincoats, and boots filled with fresh peonies, doesn’t mean you can’t get a great look with the space you have. Something From Nothing A mudroom does not have to be a stand-alone room. A great way to create the function of a mudroom that complements the style of your home is to create the illusion of a mudroom with a statement bench.  Use your creativity to make a bench with a high back or shallow cubbies flanked by storage cabinets on either side. Latch on to Laundry Typically, a mudroom is a secondary entrance for removing dirty shoes and wet clothes without traipsing through the house. A mudroom, however, does not need to be in the entrance. If you only use one entrance to your house and you want to keep that looking more formal, explore other spaces. A laundry room near the front or back door is a great option. The mudroom need not take over the space but rather can occupy a corner or wall opposite your machines. The storage cabinets typically found in a mudroom can serve double-duty here as options for storing laundry accessories such as detergent, iron and ironing board, and hangers. Reclaim a Closet You may have the perfect mudroom space in your entryway already. Reclaim and upgrade your closet hallway! If you have a double-door closet, remove the doors, update the interior walls and voila! Similar to the tips above, adding cabinetry on either side creates storage to hide clutter and gives the space an intentional built-in look. Even a deep single door can serve this purpose. Add low cabinetry, topped by a small bench with shelving or hooks above and you’ll have an instant mudroom!
