You may think that once you have a layout for your new kitchen, the creativity and design part of the job is over. In reality, it has only begun. One of the benefits of working with a kitchen designer is their knowledge of storage options available for a kitchen design. If you simply throw all of your cookware and dinnerware into cabinets and drawers, those spaces quickly turn into jumbled messes. Instead, organize your kitchenware by type, the frequency of use, and the location of where you use each item.  This will help you cook more efficiently and enjoy the entire process.

Pull-out cabinets

Pull-out cabinets are a great way to utilize narrow vertical spaces. You can organize everything from spices to cooking utensils, and your most frequently used dry goods.

Mix closed and open storage

These days there are so many options for kitchen storage. A good balance of these options can keep your space from feeling claustrophobic or overbearing. These include closed, traditional cabinets, glass-front cabinets, and open shelving.

Use vertical separators

You don’t have to be a master chef to own a variety of cutting boards, baking sheets, cooling racks, and platters. Most of us have a disorderly pile, and the one piece of cookware we need is always at the bottom of the stack. Using a vertical system of separators brings order to the chaos. Each cookware item can have its own slot or share with other boards of a similar size.  Installing these above a double oven or in a base cabinet is a smart storage solution.

Make the most of your space with a media cabinet

Do you know that awkward space to the side of your refrigerator? Good news, it no longer needs to be awkward! It turns out, it is a great place for a media cabinet to store and charge all of your family’s electronics, post a menu board, and organize important documents like homework.

Rethink traditional

It’s easy to get boxed in by traditional storage ideas when organizing your kitchen on your own (another benefit of working with an experienced kitchen designer). However, it can serve you well to think outside the cabinet. Items like dinnerware, traditionally stored in cabinets, can be kept just as accessible in drawers using movable pegs, so they can accommodate various sized dishes. Alternatively, you can organize dishes with a plate rack, similar to using vertical separators.

As you can see, there are many options for kitchen storage, and this is by no means a comprehensive list. In order to learn about all of your storage options, it is recommended you work with an experienced kitchen designer who can present the best options for your aesthetic and lifestyle.
