When you are remodeling your kitchen, it can seem like the decisions you must make are endless. Even as the project winds down, there is still so much to think about and one of those decisions is which hardware you will choose for your cabinets. Hardware has been called the jewelry of the kitchen and if you think about it in that way, you know it should enhance your overall vision for your remodel. However, it’s not only there for its good looks. Cabinet hardware will arguably get the most use in your kitchen so it’s important you choose something functional for your family’s needs.

Type
The first decision to make about your cabinet hardware will be the type you want to use. You can choose from all knobs, all pulls, or a combination of the two. To help you make this decision, the general wisdom is to choose knobs for all of your cabinets and pulls for all of your drawers. Knobs have a smaller profile, with only one screw they are simpler and quicker to install and are generally less expensive than pulls. Pulls are typically easier to grip, a factor that may be important if you plan on aging in place. Should you choose pulls, it is recommended they be about 1/3 the width of the cabinet or drawer.

Style
The style you choose for your hardware is dependent on your personal taste. However, if you get stuck, a rule of thumb is hardware with curves, texture, and detail usually complements traditional styles while sleek clean lines and smooth surfaces are best-suited for contemporary styles.

Finish
Once you have chosen your hardware type and style, all that is left is to choose the finish. While it may seem the obvious choice to simply match your hardware to other metals in your style – for instance, the stainless steel of your appliances or your lighting – hardware is actually a great opportunity to create contrast in your design. Again, some general design tips to follow are that warm cabinet tones paired with brass hardware gives a nod to vintage style while cooler tones paired with dark hardware tends to look contemporary.

The most important thing to remember when choosing cabinet hardware is, although we have supplied you with design tips above, there are no hard and fast rules. Your hardware choices should be whatever you think looks and feels the best.
